Kentucky's 35-34 overtime win over No. 10 LSU at Kroger Field came down to the smallest margin possible. One of the biggest swings in it came from Brock Coffman, the sophomore wide receiver whose 55-yard punt return early in the second quarter put the Wildcats back in front.

On3's Zack Geoghegan reported that the return was Kentucky's first punt return touchdown since Josh Ali took one back 74 yards in 2021. It was also the program's first punt return score against an AP Top 10 opponent since Derek Abney did it against No. 7 Florida in 2002. Head coach Will Stein pointed to it after the game. "It took all three phases," Stein said, according to On3.

LSU had moved ahead 10-7 just before the end of the first quarter and then forced a Kentucky punt. The Wildcats' defense answered with a three-and-out, and Coffman fielded the ensuing punt at the Kentucky 45. He slipped one tackler, used a stiff arm on another and stayed inbounds along the sideline the rest of the way to the end zone.

The play mattered because of how the first half was going. According to On3, the Tigers had built their 10 points on long, clock-draining drives, and their approach was working. Kentucky kept pace on big plays instead, scoring 14 points on what amounted to three chances. CJ Baxter set up the opening touchdown with a 77-yard run and then finished the drive from 3 yards out. Coffman's return extended that pattern and denied LSU the lead its methodical offense had earned.

LSU coach Lane Kiffin made the same point from the other side. He told reporters his team had chances to win in all three phases, and he named the punt return touchdown first.

Coffman also has a local story. He is a Lexington native who played at Sayre School, began his college career at Louisville and transferred to Kentucky in the offseason. Saturday was his sixth game as a Wildcat.
