Florida has taken the top-ranked wide receiver in the 2027 recruiting class from Texas. Five-star wideout Easton Royal has flipped his commitment from the Longhorns to the Gators, Longhorns Wire reported. The outlet described the move as the end of an 11-month saga.

College Sports Wire, which also covered the decision, rates Royal as the No. 1 wide receiver in the country. ESPN, CBS Sports, USA TODAY Sports and On3 reported the flip as well. Royal's original pledge to Texas held for close to a year, and taking a recruit of his standing away from a program in the Longhorns' position is rare.

For Florida, the commitment gives the 2027 class a headline name at a position the program has worked to rebuild through recruiting. For Texas, it means losing the centerpiece of its receiver haul to a conference rival. In the SEC, these battles over elite prospects never fully stop, and a flip can happen well after a recruit has publicly committed.

The timing makes the story bigger. The two programs meet on the field this coming weekend. No. 16 Florida (4-2) is coming off its Week 6 home game against South Carolina, which aired on SEC Network. Top-ranked Texas (4-1) played Oklahoma in Week 6 in the annual Red River game on ABC. Next up for both is a meeting in Austin on Oct. 17, and the Royal news will be part of the buildup to that game all week.

The market sees the matchup as Texas's game to lose. The Longhorns are favored at -365 on Novig, one of the venues offering prices on the game, and the best sportsbook price on Texas is -350 at FanDuel. Texas is favored by 9.5 points, and the total is 53.5. Full pricing is on the Florida at Texas game page.

A recruiting win doesn't change what happens on Saturday. Royal is a 2027 prospect and still years from playing for either team. Still, it gives Florida's staff a talking point heading into a road game against the nation's No. 1 team. For Texas, the week starts with an unwelcome storyline on top of preparing for a ranked conference opponent.

The larger stakes for Florida go beyond this one game. A win in Austin as a road underdog would put the Gators firmly in the conversation in the SEC's upper tier. A loss would leave them at 4-3 with plenty of conference play left. For Texas, a win would protect its No. 1 ranking and help settle the week after losing a high-profile recruit to the team on the other sideline.

Commitments in the 2027 cycle are nonbinding until signing day, so the recruiting fight over Royal may not be finished. For now, Florida has the nation's top receiver prospect, and the two programs meet on the field next.
