SEC tables intra-league transfer penalty, adopts standard player contracts; Kentucky in focus
The SEC has shelved a rule making intra-conference transfers sit a year and adopted a league-wide player contract template as No. 15 Kentucky heads to Oklahoma.

The SEC has set aside a proposal that would have made players who transfer from one conference school to another sit out a year. The league has also adopted a standard template for player contracts across its member schools.
SB Nation's A Sea of Blue reported both moves, citing reporting from On3's Pete Nakos, who said Monday that the intra-conference transfer rule had been tabled. The SEC voted in 2021 to let players who transfer within the league play right away. The idea of bringing back a sit-out year came up as the Protect College Sports Act, which proposes a similar restriction, works its way through Congress. A Sea of Blue noted that it makes sense for conferences to start policing these issues themselves.
The contract template is the second piece of the news. A Sea of Blue pointed to CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello, who reported that the SEC is now the second power conference after the Big Ten to adopt standardized athlete contracts. Under the league template, schools can tailor certain sections to their own needs while keeping the conference's required wording. According to that reporting, schools may share up to $21.6 million in revenue directly with athletes this academic year, which is the second year of the 10-year window created by the House v. NCAA settlement. The College Sports Commission says players received nearly $1.8 billion in direct revenue-share payments during the 2025-26 school year. CBS Sports was told the SEC contract has customizable sections but was not given the details.
A Sea of Blue's Ethan DeWitt welcomed both decisions. He argued that the open transfer market has spread success around college football, pointing to Indiana's run last season, and that a sit-out penalty would undercut that. He called the shelved proposal "one of the worst rules that could possibly be applied to the portal." He also read the contract template as a sign the SEC is building its own guardrails instead of waiting to see whether the federal bill passes.
The rule was tabled, not voted down, so it could come back. For now, SEC programs going into the winter portal window can keep recruiting players from other league schools with no eligibility penalty attached.
On the field, Kentucky has a road test this weekend. The No. 15 Wildcats are 5-1 and visit Oklahoma (3-2) on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. EDT on SEC Network. Even with the better record, Kentucky is the underdog. On Novig, one of the venues pricing the game, Oklahoma is favored at -223. The Sooners are favored by 6.5 points on the spread, and the total is 43.5. The best sportsbook price on Oklahoma is -250 at BetMGM. Full prices for the game are on our Kentucky at Oklahoma page.
A win in Norman would strengthen Kentucky's case as a ranked team. A loss would be its second of the season with the back half of the conference schedule still to come.
