A home dog in a conference rivalry getting the full field goal is the kind of number I used to hate hanging. The moneylines put LSU around 60 percent, which is a short favorite on the road, and three points is the most important number in the sport. I'll take the key number and the home building, no apologies.

A total of 48.5 tells you the market expects a grinder, and 16.5 is a lot of points to lay when possessions are scarce. Fewer drives means fewer chances to pull away, so the big number does more work for the dog. Kentucky plus the points, because I'm buying the number and not the team.

Vanderbilt at -155 implies roughly 61 percent, and that's a fair amount of respect for a program that hasn't usually been priced like a home favorite. When the spread sits right on three, I'd rather be holding the points than laying them. NC State plus the field goal, and I'll live with a push if it lands there.

At -110 you need to be right 52.4 percent of the time, and I put Arkansas covering 24.5 at home closer to 54 to 55 percent. Margins this large in conference games tend to shrink once the favorite pulls its starters, and a three-touchdown-plus number against an SEC home side asks a lot. The edge is modest and the variance is real, so treat this as a small expected-value play rather than a strong conviction.

DraftKings

Auburn at +114 implies about 46.7 percent, or roughly 45 percent once you strip out the vig, which is consistent with a 2.5-point spread. My own rough number is nearer 48 percent, because a road favorite at less than a field goal is essentially a coin flip with home field priced thin. A three-point gap is not dramatic, and early-season ratings rest on small samples, but plus money on a near-even game is where I would rather sit.

Florida at Auburn is a coin flip on the board, and coin-flip SEC road games in September tend to be played with conservative play-calling and a lot of field-position football. Both staffs will want to protect the football and win in the trenches rather than open it up and risk a turnover-driven loss. At 53.5, I think the total assumes more explosive plays than this matchup is built to produce.

A 59.5 total between two teams priced three points apart looks inflated to me; break-even is 52.4 percent and I estimate the under at around 54. Totals this early in the season lean on a couple of games of data, and markets tend to overreact to recent high-scoring results, a narrative I distrust. The gap is thin, so this is a disciplined lean, not a strong opinion.

South Carolina is laying only a field goal at home, which tells me the market sees these teams as roughly even on a neutral field. I trust the Gamecocks' front to win more snaps than it loses against a Mississippi State line that has to travel into a loud night environment. At -3 I am essentially backing the home side to win by more than a single score's worth of margin, and that is a price I can live with.

The desk has South Carolina laying a field goal at home, which tells me the room has already decided the result. A three-point spread is essentially a coin flip with a home-field sticker on it, and I would rather collect the full three with the team nobody wants to be seen backing. Mississippi State plus the key number, and I will sleep fine.

When Alabama hosts a nonconference opponent with a spread this wide, the game usually gets decided at the line of scrimmage, and the winning side tends to lean on the run and drain the clock in the second half. I expect Florida State to try to shorten the game, and Alabama will be happy to oblige once it has control. Fifty and a half asks both offenses for steady production, and I think the script points under.

Alabama at home in the late window with a name-brand opponent is exactly the kind of game where the public pays for the logo and the spotlight. Eighteen and a half is a lot of points to lay in a game the market itself expects to be lower scoring, and every one of those points is a cushion for the ugly side. I will hold my nose and take Florida State and the hook.

Texas, the last kickoff of the night, a big name against a mid-major. That is a recipe for an inflated number built on highlight reels. Nearly thirty points means the favorite has to stay in the mood for four full quarters, and big favorites rarely care much about margin once the outcome is settled. UTSA plus the points is my kind of ugly.
